Cellulaseisanenzymethatcatalyzesthehydrolysisofcertainlinkagesincelluloseandothercarbohydrates.Ithelpshydrolyzetheendo-1,4-β-D-glycosidiclinkagesincellulose,lichenin,barleyglucan,andthecellooligosaccharidescellotriosetocellohexaose,whichisveryusefulforresearch.Itdoesnotcleavep-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucosideorcellobiose.Italsohydrolyzesxylosylserinelinkagesinintactglycosaminoglycanfromacorepeptide.Cellulaseisusedinthefermentationofbiomassintobiofuels,althoughthisprocessisrelativelyexperimentalatpresent.
