HygromycinBisanaminoglycosideantibioticisolatedfrom Streptomyceshygroscopicus.Itiscommonlyusedtostudyproteinsynthesis.Asidefromitsefficacyagainstbacteria,fungi,andhighereukaryoticcells,hygromycinBisalsoanantiviralagentinhibitingtranslationuponselectivelyenteringcellsmadepermeableduetoviralinfection.Itworksasastandardselectionantibioticingeneexperiments,especiallyforselectionofhygromycinresistancegenetransformedcells.
Aminoglycosideantibioticsarecomposedofaminogroupsattachedtoglycosides.Theybindthe30sribosomalsubunit,causingmisreADIngofthemRNAsequenceandinhibitionoftranslocation.Consequently,proteinsynthesisisinhibited.
